I never thought I would need to find a bankruptcy lawyer, I never though this would happen to me. To be honest, in my head I used to think of people who went through bankruptcy as bums. Why don’t they just own up and pay their bills like everybody else? Why did they spend more than they could afford to pay? These were the thoughts I had in my head.
Well, I have to eat those words now. It turns out that after a year of unemployment, anyone will have trouble paying the bills. And “get a job” is a lot easier to say than do in the current economy. I went out and looked for work every week even when it got discouraging. Eventually I had applied at literally every opening in my field in our area, and I noticed less and less openings happening. We tried to find something further out, near where my folks live, but no luck.. Things got bad.
When we started talking about bankruptcy I’ll admit it, I was scared. The idea of losing our house broke my heart. It is not a huge house but it’s in a safe area and the kids have friends here. Plus, what else would we lose? I used my truck to do odd jobs when I could pick them up and my wife needs the car to run errands and take the kids places.

I remember my wife started crying when she found that out. The lawyer stayed at our side through the proceedings and helped us make smart choices. I will never be proud of this low point in my life but I am proud that we handled it smartly, and our lawyer was crucial to that.
